The Senate has approved an amendment to the first article of the Dutch Constitution. The constitutional amendment is the result of an initiative bill by Members of Parliament Hammelburg (D66), Bromet (GroenLinks) and De Hoop (PvdA).
The new, amended Article 1 now reads: “All who are in the Netherlands shall be treated equally in equal circumstances. Discrimination on the basis of religion, belief, political opinion, race, gender, disability, sexual orientation or on any other basis is not allowed”. ‘Disability’ and ‘sexual orientation’ have been added to the non-discrimination grounds.
Minister Bruins Slot: “The Constitution forms the foundation of our society. It is important that we keep them up to date. The special thing about this amendment is that the initiative for it lay with the House of Representatives. As a result, I acted as an adviser to the House and the initiators defended the amendment proposal”.
