In the Historical Café of the Oud Utrecht association, QUS team members Marijke Huisman and Maurice van Lieshout introduce the canon of Utrecht’s rich LGBTI+ history. They highlight the role of activists in documenting and making histories visible that have long been underexposed. On the basis of a number of canon windows, they also explain how views on male-male and female-female relationships, sex and gender have changed since the 18th century and what significance those changes had for Utrechternaars and residents of Utrecht.
Marijke Huisman is assistant professor of public history at the Department of History and Art History at Utrecht University. Maurice van Lieshout is a historical researcher and publicist. From 2001 to 2019 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Oud Utrecht.
The Historical Café will take place on Friday, September 15, 2023 in the Theater Hall of the Neude Library. Doors open: 5 p.m., start: 5:15 p.m. This event is free to attend. Sign up via: https://www.oud-utrecht.nl/agenda/evenement/813-historisch-cafe-canon-van-de-utrechtse-lhbti-historie
